Transfer Student SOAR

SOAR (Student Orientation and Academic Resources) is a required program that ensures that all new students have necessary information and resources to succeed in your transition to UNC Charlotte. The SOAR program consists of three parts:

  1. Reserve your in-person SOAR session through your Future 49er Portal - starting on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 at 10 a.m.
  2. Access your New Student Modules through Canvas, which you will gain access to within 24 hours of registering and paying for your in-person SOAR session. Your New Student Modules include campus resources, and advising and course registration information.
  3. Attend your in-person SOAR program on the selected date.

ALL COMPONENTS OF THE SOAR PROGRAM ARE MANDATORY FOR INCOMING STUDENTS:  You must complete the New Student Modules in order to gain access to advising and course registration. You must also attend your in-person orientation program in order to keep your course schedule.

After reserving your session date, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 2, students will be added to a SOAR Canvas course that includes the New Student Modules. These are focused on providing an overview of campus life, as well as required academic advising information. Completing the modules is required in order to gain access to the course registration system.

Students should complete their modules and register for classes at least two (2) business days prior to their in-person SOAR session.

On their reserved SOAR date, students will visit campus to engage in interactive experiences. Check-in for in-person SOAR sessions will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the day will conclude at 5 p.m. The in-person SOAR session will focus on three institutional commitments for first-year students:

  • Belonging: Students will meet with student leaders (Orientation Counselors) and their peers, as well as learn about a variety of campus resources.
  • Financial Literacy: Students will understand their financial responsibilities on campus, as well as foundational knowledge of how to plan and prepare for financial health.
  • Success: Students will hear about their academic college expectations, the purpose of advising, and how to be a successful student.

Please note that the student and family schedules include separate and combined sessions throughout the day.

Please know that full participation in the SOAR program is required. Should students miss their in-person program, their course schedule will be dropped.

Changing Your Major

For those who need overnight accommodations, there are off-campus options available.

UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel & Conference Center

The UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel & Conference Center is located on the UNC Charlotte campus and boasts views of the University City area. The hotel offers a fitness center, outdoor pool, and Golden Owl Tavern, as well as direct Light Rail access.

Students with documented disabilities such as vision, hearing or mobility impairments, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or learning disabilities that may require test accommodations should contact the Office of Disability Services at least one month in advance of attending SOAR by calling 704-687-0040 V/TDD. Students must provide disability documentation to the University in order to determine eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations.

While there are no required tests that occur during SOAR, test accommodations, such as low distraction environment, extended test time, computer assistance, or enlarged print, must be requested one week in advance and must be appropriate for the documented disability for those students who wish to take the Foreign Language Placement Exam at their SOAR session.

Common Questions

Is it okay if I don't have my immunization documents in time for SOAR?

You must submit your immunization records prior to the start of the academic year. Information on immunization requirements can be found on the Student Health Center website.

How can I change the date for SOAR?

You can change your reserved SOAR date by logging back in to the Future 49er Portal with your username and password.

What if I don't have my final transcripts by the time I register for classes?

We recommend that you have your unofficial transcripts available when you register for classes, if you have not yet submitted your official transcripts. This information will allow you to understand how your current courses fit into the course sequencing for your major. While you will be able to register for courses without submitting official transcripts, you may be limited from registering for courses for which your prerequisites have not been processed with your official transcripts. You should submit your official transcripts as soon as they are available.

I have paid the fee but my portal says I haven't, why does it say that?

If the registration system is stating there is a pending payment then there is still a payment due. If a payment attempt is made but the payment fails, this can show up as a pending payment within your bank account. Please reach out to if you have any payment questions.

What do I do if I can't attend?

The SOAR program is required for all new students in order to make sure you successfully transition to campus. If you have personal limitations that prevent you from completing your SOAR requirement, email with your name, 801#, and detailed information on why you are seeking a program exemption. Please know that limited program exemptions are granted.

Why can't I sign up for the specific day I want?

You are able to see the SOAR session dates with remaining seats available. If you do not see a SOAR session date in the reservation portal, this means that the session is full.

I want to change my major, can I do that at SOAR?

It is highly recommended that you change your major as quickly as possible, and that you do so in advance of your completion of the New Student Modules. You will complete academic advising requirements in the New Student Modules, prior to course registration, so changing your major in advance ensures that you receive the correct advising information for your course registration process.

Why do I have a hold?

There are a few reasons that you may have a hold on your account. If you have a SOAR Hold, it will be released within 24 hours of the completion of your New Student Modules so that you can register for courses. If you have an Advising Hold, you must meet with an advisor from your academic college to lift the Advising Hold. You can find information on how to meet with an advisor in your New Student Modules on Canvas.

If you have an Undergraduate Admissions (UA) hold, you may need to submit additional documentation required by the University. Questions about UA holds can be directed to

I can't get my modules to work.

If you are having trouble logging in to Canvas, please make sure that you are logging in using your UNC Charlotte NinerNET login and password.

If you are having any issues with the Canvas system, please see the Canvas Support Page through Information Technology Services.

If you are having problems with your New Student Modules, please contact with information on what challenges you are experiencing.
